UK E-minister calls for lower broadband prices
News: UK E-minister calls for lower broadband prices - The Register
Comment: Clearly a good announcement, let's see if it's just further rhetoric or whether further action will follow.
Hilarious facts derived from the article is, 13m homes connected to ADSL enabled exchanges, 50k installed ADSL's - that's 0.0038% utilisation. In addition, 180 ADSL resellers sharing 25k installation (BT have half of them themselves) - that an average of under 139 ADSL connection each - I would suggest that this is an insufficient number to generate enough income for them to survive.

Opinion piece - Broadband Baloney - BusinessWeek.

Comment: Pretty negative piece, that in my view is someone jumping on the dot bomb bandwagon. Interesting facts listed - 'Market watcher Forrester Research Inc. estimates 72% of dial-up Net access customers won't pay more than $25 a month for broadband--half of what most providers now charge.' & 'fewer than 5% of U.S. online households have (it)'.

'Info' on Xbox2
A reported 'Exclusive' from UK PC Format magazine about the Xbox 2 or HomeStation. Interesting as MS were VERY keen not to portray the yet unrelease Xbox in this way - fearing the 'MS is taking over your life/world' argument put format while the trial was going on.

UEFA rules streaming video offside
Sensible thinking from UEFA to not stream video, on a couple of points :-
  1. Cost of BB distribution of these clips could be crippling. I imagine they are going to build up addiction of this video content using NarrowBand (NB) and then introduce charging with a premium for the BB version
  2. I don't know where most of the UEFA viewers would be, but it's highly possible that the countires don't have wide BB access.

McKinsey predict 40m BB household in 3-5 years
McKinsey prediction that 40m US households will have BB access in 3-5 years has some pretty sobering financials in it, but generally this article shows a typical surface-level understanding of what the medium is about with limiting comments summing up whole of iTV like 'shows that permit viewers to decide how they would like plot-lines to turn out (interactive TV)', being a clear illustration of this.
